Traumatic Memories

Traumatic memories are ones we often wish we could erase. This is particularly true for people suffering post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).  According to Dr. William R. Klemm, there are several different approaches that have been tried to deal with memory issues related to PTSD. One method is called extinction therapy. This method helps unlearn our fears by intentionally re-living traumatic events in a safe environment. Doing this teaches us that we can deal with these difficult memories. Unfortunately, recent animal studies have found that the positive “conditioned response” to traumatic triggers may, after time, be replaced by the original negative response.
