PTSD Changes How the Mind Works, Not How the Brain Looks

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a serious psychological disorder that is a result of serious psychological trauma. While this can often accompany traumatic brain injuries (TBI) especially in military personnel, PTSD and TBI are very different in their cause and in treatment. It is important to distinguish between the brain as a physical entity and the mind as the functioning of the brain. PTSD is a result of a psychological assault that impacts how the brain works, not the physical structure. The brain with PTSD feels constant threat and distress in such a way that it can’t just be willed away; the brain has to be “re-set” to restore calm and normal functioning.
