Predisposed to PTSD

It’s estimated that more than 50% of us will suffer a traumatic event in our lifetime. Whether we have a serious car accident, are physically assaulted, or engage in combat duty during a war, many of us will survive a trauma but relatively few of us will develop PTSD. Rachel Yehuda, a neuroscientist, says, “We don’t walk into trauma equally, so we don’t all come out of it equally.” She explains that there are several risk factors for PTSD, including previous trauma, a family history of conditions such as alcoholism or depression, and childhood abuse. Through research, she has found another possible risk factor: low cortisol levels.
