Grounding: A Critical Element in Healing Trauma and Other Life Experiences

Trauma causes us to revert to the animal instincts of fight, flight or freeze. Posttraumatic stress disorder puts us in this primitive survival condition on a continuing basis. The heightened state of being causes a number of physical and psychological difficulties, including an ungrounded or unconnected feeling. We may feel short tempered or unable to think things out clearly. Grounding ourselves, particularly through the use of yoga, may help to deal with these issues. Vigorous physical exercise is also a good way to reduce stress. Mindfulness in our daily activities, aroma therapy, or focused meditation are also useful in relieving the symptoms of PTSD.
