Compassion Fatigue and The Fear of Being a Victim

Does compassion for humanity wane when chipped away at by an uncaring media that bombards us with images of calamity? Does the onslaught of news about death and destruction gradually wear away our ability to care? Do we slowly lose our humanity? If you look at the visually recorded history of the planet, you see an unending stream of horrific scenes from World Wars to Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia and so forth. The effect is bound to make anyone turn away. But if we listen to the stories of those involved, the victims, the survivors, our hearts will be touched and we will gradually feel our compassion return.
