Healmyptsd.com presents an excerpt from Robert Scaer’s new book 8 Keys to Brain-Body Balance. This particular section looks at the freeze response of animals. If fight or flight will not work, freezing in place is a common survival response. Humans do not drop to the ground and play dead like an opossum but they do when, for instance, shamed in public by a dominant figure, blush, and temporarily experience mental freezing. Sometimes extreme grief will cause physical collapse, numbness and a stunned reaction. Emotional trauma will also cause a freeze reaction. Afterward, we process what we have experienced. The way in which we recover from trauma is an aspect of this survival mechanism.
