Why Should Trauma Survivors Speak Out-Thoughts from Elie Wiesel

“Even if you remember a spark of the flame, that’s enough. Even if you remember one face, it would be enough,” stated Elie Wiesel, Auschwitz and Buchenwald concentration camp survivor, peace activist and world-renowned author to his interviewer, Richard Heffner. Wiesel told Heffner that he recommends trauma survivors speak out about their experiences, and use their revelations as a way to prevent future genocide. He emphasized the importance of mentally surviving the post war life. At that time, Wiesel found little interest in stories of the Holocaust survivors. His personal tale of trauma came out in 1960, after long struggle, and he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1986. His message: Tell your story!
