The Effects of Childhood Trauma

In a guest post by Dr. Kim Dennis, we learn some of the effects of childhood trauma. The impact of emotion upon the body is called somatization. Emotions that are too intense for a child to process are sometimes internalized and manifest themselves in the form of physical pains, such as migraine headaches. Another response to trauma is disassociation. This means a child becomes emotionally detached from him or herself. A child stuck in this response may start exhibiting eating disorders, self-harm, and/or addiction. Finally, these youth may develop affect dysregulation; they can become unable to regulate or deal normally with their emotions.
