Primer on Attachment Styles

This article outlines the three basic “Insecure Attachment” patterns that adults exhibit. They are based on the different types of parenting to which we were exposed as children. The first is the “Avoidant” pattern which relates to an extreme lack of presence, active hostility or rejection by the parent. Next is the “Ambivalent” attachment pattern. This pattern is the result of inconsistent and unpredictable parenting. Finally is the “Disorganized” attachment pattern which happens when parents are disorienting, overly chaotic, or frightening. An excellent way to heal from these difficult relationship patterns is with the loving help of a partner who meets our needs and helps us return to a healthy “Secure” attachment pattern.
