How Mindfulness Works to Regulate Emotion in Your Brain

Have you ever felt too depressed to solve a problem? It may be that your brain is not able to regulate your emotions. Mindfulness training may be the solution. A University of Toronto study published in Emotion looked at two groups of participants. One group was taught mindfulness training. The other group was used as a control. Everyone was shown video clips. Half the clips were of neutral subjects such as gardening. The other clips were sad scenes from movies. After looking at the clips, participants rated how sad they felt on a scale of one to five. Those with mindfulness training were much less affected by the sad clips, indicating a more detached mindset.
